The Brakefields both grew up in towns around Kandahar, Saskatchewan. Denis has vivid childhood memories of visiting Kandahar’s grain elevators with his farming father. Charolette remembers the thriving town in the 1960s as a place to get a steak at the infamous Sam’s Steakhouse. After marrying, the two settled in Wynyard, an adjacent town, to raise their family while Charolette worked at a bank and Denis in farming. Now in semi-retirement, the couple has settled in Kandahar to lead a quieter life. Denis is the hamlet ‘overseer’ or mayor and runs the administrative side of things, such as handling complaints and sanitation issues. The Brakefields like to spend their time painting together, playing cards and making puzzles. Denis also collects tractors and other machinery and together they like to visit oldie car shows to show off their 1960’s vintage Chevy.
